It's probably disappearing because it's so annoying. Not the link on the left, but the posts shoved into your stream. When it was "on" for me it was filled with BS animated gifs and posts about testing Ripples.
I'm wondering if Google is rolling it back for tweaking.
The What's Hot link is disappearing from a lot of peoples feeds.
